Vanuit de vaststelling dat (de sfeer van) een landschap moeilijk in één enkel beeld te vatten is, heb ik met ‘Newmansland’ geprobeerd om de veelheid van indrukken op een bepaalde plek en op een bepaald tijdstip vast te leggen. Van (nagenoeg) elke ‘oogopslag’ of indruk heb ik een aparte foto gemaakt en die gecombineerd tot een ‘nieuw landschap’. Dit nieuw landschap is alomvattend, en tegelijk bevreemdend. Het resultaat is een abstract ogend werk, als een vage herinnering, dat door langer en dichter te kijken, traag maar zeker concreter wordt en herkenbare details onthult.
The project ‘Newmansland’ arose from my experience of not being able to capture the atmosphere of a landscape in just one picture. Therefore, I made compositions of carefully chosen shots of the same landscape, from different angles. By putting together multiple images, I created a new reality. This new landscape is the complete vision of it, and therefore comprehensive. At the same time it feels alienating and confronting looking at it. Those little details that are recognizable confirm the philosophy that only a piece of reality can be displayed at each recording.
